How to Hunt Feral Pigs With Bait

There is more to baiting feral pigs than throwing corn onto the ground. Feral hogs often feed during low-light periods. Large boars tear up land and chase other native species away. They are smart and difficult to hunt using traditional means. Luckily pigs have one major weakness, they cannot overlook an easy meal. For this reason hunting feral pigs over properly prepaired bait can be extremely successful.

Using a corn feeder is the most common way to bait wild pigs. Feeders come in several different styles. Some use timers to spread the corn and some use gravity. Timers usually spread corn twice a day, once shortly after day-break and once in the late afternoon. When the timer goes off corn is tossed onto the ground. After the pigs become accustomed to the sound of the feeder, the noise becomes a diner bell to them. Gravity feeders typically use a long pipe filled with bait. As the pigs eat the bait from the bottom of the pipe, gravity pushed the bait down. Gravity feeders are cheap and easy to use. The biggest problem with feeders is after the bait is gone the pigs move on.

Another popular way to bait feral pigs is to broadcast the bait over the hunting area. Once hogs find the bait, they remain in the area. Rebaiting the same food plot keeps the wild boars nearby. As the pigs start to feel safe here they will arrive earlier and stay in the baited area longer.

Corn, the most popular bait for wild hogs, is like candy to a pig. Dry corn is easy and mess free. Simply either dump the corn directly into a feeder or use your hands to broadcast over the hunting area. When using corn on a food plot one way to increase the action is to ferment the corn a few days ahead of time. Fill a five gallon bucket half way with corn. Add 1/2 cup sugar. Pour just enough water into the bucket to cover the corn mixture. Let this set for at least two days. Dump this bucket in small piles throughout the food plot, then broadcast the remaining dry corn to fill in the bare ground. Over time the wild boars will till the ground leaving nothing but bare dirt. 

Baiting with corn can keep pigs in the area for a long period of time. However, for hunters that want a quick hunt nothing works better than slop. Slop is old leftover food. When planning a pig hunt start saving your leftover food weeks ahead of time in a five gallon bucket with a lid. Do not refrigerate it. The best slop smells so bad you want to gag every time the lid is moved. When there are maggots crawling in the slop it is ready to be used as bait. To hunt with slop simply pour your bucket on the ground downwind. Any pig within miles will come running. Its a good idea to wear gloves when handling slop. 

Hunting feral pigs over bait is a great way to get a younger person interested in hunting. Basic hunting principals such as scent control, wind direction and lack of movement must be followed but not to the same extent as other big game. The pig’s habit of visiting bait sites during low light periods keeps the time on stand short. To make hunting pigs even better, some states do not have a closed season. Wild boar make excellent table fare and larger boars look impressive when mounted.

But pigs are much more than the butt of jokes and breakfast food stuff.  Pigs are super intelligent mammals who get a bit too much bad press and, frankly, are treated appallingly particularly in intense farming conditions.

 

So as an accolade to this wonderfully cute, smart trotter, here are some facts that you (maybe) never knew about them.

 

There are many different breeds of pig from the wild boar of the Eastern European and Russian forests, to prized Gloucester Old Spots.  Pigs run wild in the jungles of South East Asia and the islands of the Indian Ocean.  In fact wild pigs can be found widespread across Europe and Asia, from Ireland to Japan, and from Siberia to the Indonesian Islands.  In North & South America and Australia, domesticated pigs have become feral, and now live in the wild.

 

Pigs do not have a fully functional sweat gland, so when they are rolling in mud, they’re not being dirty, they are simply keeping cool; and they have the sense to realise that this mud acts as a sun screen as well.

 

Vietnamese pigs make good companion pets, if given the correct care and attention.  They can be relatively easy to live with, if a little attention seeking.  The huge craze for owning a Vietnamese Potbellied pig, in the United States in the 1990′s has become less popular, since people became wise to the fact that these pigs grow quite large and are territorial like any other animal.   Famous owners include George Clooney and Brad Pitt.

 

Truffle hunting pigs have been taught to snuffle out truffle’s and are used by truffle hunters in Europe to find the prized fungi.  Unfortunately having become attracted to the delicious smell, then taste of the expensive and rare mushrooms, pigs are sometimes being replaced by sniffer dogs, which tend not to eat their bounty.

 

Pigs are known to be excellent football players, as in, they, like dogs, derive pleasure from playing with a ball and generally being social.  This emphasizes their intelligence and need for social interaction.

 

As already discussed, pigs have their reasons for rolling in mud, which is something God obviously didn’t know about when in the bible he decreed  pigs and swine to be unclean.  As a result, certain religions do not eat pigs including Seventh Day Adventists.

 

Jews and Muslims have their own reasons for not eating the meat of the pig.  But the one I like best is that God or Allah made all animals for a reason, and it is sinful to be unkind to them, so eating any meat is forbidden.

Pig Hunting Dogs – Best Ways Of Training Them

While wild pigs and wild boars are different, there are similar tactics used in the hunting of them. There is a certain excitement involved in the pig hunt, and the hunter often feels that he’s doing a great service to people in the area as the feral pigs and boars are highly adaptable and have overrun much of the landscape. In the 1920′s the European wild boar was introduced by a Monterey, California landowner. When it bred with domestic pigs a hog hybrid was developed that is now today’s wild boar. Due to excessive breeding the population of this wild pig has increased exponentially and many states offer open season year round in the hopes of controlling it. These pigs can not only be aggressive, but they damage much of the vegetation and landscape of the area ruining habitat for other, more fragile species. In 1957 the Fish and Game Commision established official seasons on them and it wasn’t until 1992 that a tag was required to hunt them. There are also special rules and regulations regarding the use of hunting dogs in the capture of these pigs.

In California wild pigs are present in 56 of the 58 counties, with a majority of them living on private land. The pig’s behavior has altered greatly to adapt to the hunting techniques often employed to catch them. While they once moved around during the day, they have morphed into a more nocturnal creature, foraging for food at night. The most popular way to hunt these pigs is with hunting dogs, and any number of breeds are used. At one of the only pig hunting dog training schools in the world, Joshua Kauta’s school looks for characteristics such as courage, stamina, intelligence, and tenacity in the training of a good pig dog. One of the most popular breeds used for hunting pig is the bull terrier, along with other breeds such as sheep and cattle dogs crossed with breeds such as the Labrador for it’s sense of smell.

Pig dog training is often in rugged and hilly landscapes and a dog needs a lot of room and open area with well-trained pigs to get proper training. It’s essential for a pig dog to begin it’s training at a young age. There are two types of dogs used when it comes to hunting pigs; those that are used for bailing, which track a pig and keep it at bay by barking at it until the hunter can arrive, and there are the holder dogs, which grab onto a pig’s ears and keep it steady. Whichever type of hunting the sportsmen prefers, wild pig hunting is both exciting and provides a service to many of the local landowners.

Jack Russell Terriers

 When used on a hunt, Jack Russells would scare the fox or rabbit out of its burrow so the bigger dogs could catch it. To do this they needed to be quick on their feet and ferocious towards game.

 Temperament

In keeping with its hunting background, Jack Russells are bold, energetic and curious about their surroundings. They have great stamina and in spite of their size, will outrun their owner any day. If given opportunity, they love to roam and a secure garden is a must. Jack Russells tend to be dominant and it is essential to establish who is the boss in the relationship; to define who is the pack-leader. These little dogs are fearless and will often tackle a dog several times their size.

 Do they make Good Pets?

Jack Russells are loyal, intelligent companions and tend to be one-man dogs. They are tolerant to a degree but will not accept abuse or rough treatment from small children. As a pet, they require more attention than some breeds as they have loads of energy and need regular exercise and play times.

 Do they get on with Other Animals?

As they were bred to work with other dogs, Jack Russells generally enjoy company. They are not so friendly towards cats but if raised with them, they normally don’t cause any trouble. It is not a good idea to keep rabbits, hamsters, guinea pigs or similar as the dog’s hunting instincts will kick in.

 Do they respond well to Training?

Jack Russells are bright and learn quickly. Use repetition and treats to teach him to follow basic commands or take him to puppy school. The most important lesson he needs to learn is that he is not in charge.

 Behavior

Along with their active natures and love of walking and running, Jack Russells can display some negative qualities. These traits often raise their heads when the dog is bored. Bad behaviors include digging, yapping and aggression towards strangers.

 Appearance

A typical Jack Russell will reach 10 to 12 inches at the shoulders. The body is normally compact and balanced, being solid and hard in appearance. The eyes are dark and ears small and V-shaped. White should be the main colour of a Jack Russell with tan, brown or black markings across the head and body. Their fur can be smooth or wiry.

 Jack Russells are a very popular breed and if handled correctly can give years of enjoyment to their owners. Just remember that in spite of their small size, they are not lap dogs and hate to be treated as such.

Things to Consider Before You Buy a Miniature Pig

I’m always happy to hear that somebody is considering adopting or purchasing a miniature or potbelly pig. They are fantastic animals and if you plan on getting one you’ll have years of fun together.


Before you make the leap, make sure you know what you are getting into. You, your family, your other pets and, of course, your potential mini, all deserve the best and that means making an informed decision. Do as much research as possible in advance to ensure a happy relationship. What follows are some considerations to get you started.


Check your local and county ordinances. In some places, if it walks like a pig and oinks like a pig it is a pig regardless of its size. Unless you’re zoned to maintain livestock, these areas will frown on your new friend traipsing around.


Next, consider that “miniature” is a relative term. Unlike its miniature counterparts, a farm pig can grow to hundreds of pounds in size, easily attaining weights of 700 pounds or more. A blue-ribbon prize winning county fair sow might well top out at over 1000 pounds. So when you hear “miniature,” it’s only miniature in comparison to those massive examples. Though comparatively smaller, miniatures can still weigh as much as or more than a large dog (40-200 pounds) though they will be more compact.


Like dogs, miniature pigs are also highly social animals. They form very close bonds with their human family members and can suffer depression when abandoned. If you aren’t sure you can commit to a long term bonding with your pet, you might want to consider a less social animal. It’s also important to know that some breeds can live as long as twenty-five years so this is not a short-term commitment you’re considering. Learn the lifespan potential of the breed you are considering and plan accordingly.


If you’re still committed to bringing home the bacon (sorry, couldn’t resist) then it’s time to consider your pet’s dwelling. Miniature pigs are not fans of change so it’s best to have what you (and your pet) need arranged before you even walk in the door together for the first time.


Have a nursery set up for your mini complete with toys, a bed, water bowl, blankets and towels (for him to root in). Yes, pigs love toys and you can provide them with hours of fun by purchasing small rubber/plastic squeak toys for them. Pigproof the space in advance much the same way as you might childproof a room by covering electrical outlets, ensuring electrical cords are out of reach and that there are no sharp objects or small ingestible hazards lying around.


In addition to a nursery you’ll want to provide your mini with an outdoor area for grazing, wandering and rooting. Do not use chemical fertilizers on grass your pet may graze on and be sure the area is enclosed so piggy doesn’t wander off.


I’d be remiss in not mentioning trash. Pigs are not dirty animals but they eat…well, like pigs. Just as a dog will gladly knock over a trashcan for a helping of four-day-old chicken bones, a pig will gladly dine at the Hefty Bag Buffet if given the chance. Ensure your trashcans have child locks or stay secured in cabinets. Latches for your refrigerator are also recommended. Miniature pigs are amazingly bright animals and they will, given the chance, learn how to open the fridge for their dining pleasure.


You should also have high quality feed ready for your pet and rules in place for your children. Let children know not to play too rough with their new pet. Your mini’s first day at home, away from its former surroundings, is full of new (and often frightening) sights, smells and sounds. Children should be gentle and calm and existing pets should be slowly acclimated to the new family addition.


Finally, as a bonus tip, you will quickly learn that miniature pigs do not like to be picked up and will squeal horribly when they are. People often wonder why this is or if they are hurting their pet. Don’t worry about it. Pick your pig up when needed but don’t do so just in an effort to cuddle. The pets most of us are accustomed to (dogs and cats) aren’t particularly offended by being picked up and carried because they are familiar with the sensation. Being carried in the mouths of their mothers is within the instinctive norm for them. Pigs, however, have no such frame of reference and instinctively associate being picked up with being prey animals.


Does that mean these little guys aren’t affectionate? Bite your tongue. Nothing says “love” in quite the same way as a pig snuffling, grunting and squealing with joy when its family comes home from work. It’s how you’ll know that piggy loves you and missed you while you were away. Your pet will also love to snuggle up next to you as it is accustomed to doing with its litter mates. Just don’t let piggy get in the habit of jumping up on you. Those hard hooves, I assure you, will leave your legs affectionately bruised.

Guinea Pigs – a Cavy Q

The guinea pig is one of the most popular pets in North America. In spite of this, there are many facts about this little creature that are not commonly known by most people. Please join me as I attempt to explore (sometimes successfully) some facts regarding the history and characteristics of our friend the guinea pig.

Author’s note: No pigs were harmed in the writing of this article.

Q: How much do guinea pigs weigh at birth?

A: Guinea pigs (also known as cavies) only weigh in at around three ounces at birth.

Q: When guinea pigs are born, do they hold them up by their legs and spank them like human babies?

A: No! Absolutely not. (See author’s note above).

Q: How large do they get to be when they grow up? Do they weigh more than a sweet potato? They’re kind of shaped like a sweet potato.

A: The average adult boar (male) weighs around three pounds. The smaller adult sow (female) averages only about two pounds. I don’t know how much the average adult sweet potato weighs.

Q: What is the difference between a sweet potato and a yam?

A: This one deserves a two-part answer: 1) Neither one is a mammal and 2) remember, we’re talking about guinea pigs!

Q: How big do guinea pigs get? How long is the average adult cavy?

A: As adults, guinea pigs average about 9 – 14 inches in length. (At least as long as most adult sweet potatoes).

Q: How long do guinea pigs live? How long would that be in dog years?

A: On average, this little rodent has a life expectancy of about five to seven years. I don’t know how long that would be in dog years – but I can tell you from experience; in husband years, it’s about seven minutes.

Q: How come dog years are a measurement of time whereas light years are a measurement of distance?

A: Yams and sweet potatoes are both angiosperms. However, yams are from the Dioscoreaceae family whereas sweet potatoes are botanically unrelated and are from the Convolvulacea family…

Q: What do you call baby cavies? Piglets? Piggies? Kittens? Sprouts? Futons?

A: Nope, oddly enough, although adult males are called boars and females are called sows; baby guinea pigs are not called piglets (or futons). They’re called pups. So, if our dog gave birth to pups, I’m sure it would really confuse our guinea pig because…

(our dog is a male).

Q: What is a group of cavies called? A pack? Flock? Covey of cavies? Gaggle of guineas? A pride of pigs?

A: Wrong, wrong, wrong, wrong… and… wrong. A group of guinea pigs is called a herd.

Q: Herd of guinea pigs?

A: Of course I’ve heard of guinea pigs! (Rimshot).

Q: What’s a henway?

A: Not fallin for that one.

A: How come a cavy’s eyes are on the sides of its head instead of in the front like ours? Doesn’t that make it harder to wear glasses?

Q: In the wild, guinea pigs are a prey animal – that is, they get eaten. Their eyes are on the sides of their heads in order to widen their field of vision and allow them to better detect predators. Also, most cavies wear contact lenses because – glasses on a guinea pig? That’s just silly.

Best Dogs For Boar Hunting

When asking a wild boar hunter the best breed of dog for the job, opinions differ. Many characteristics must combine to make a good wild pig dog, but popular breeds are often the cur, feist, pit bull, or American bulldog. Regardless of the breed, the best dog for the job is one that has great stamina for tracking these pigs.

While boars were introduced to the country when settlers brought their domesticated pigs and allowed them to run loose. Because pigs are of high intelligence, they were able to adapt and thrive and breed. It wasn’t long before their numbers had increased exponentially and a dog was needed to control the population. The wild boars were not only known for being aggressive towards people they encountered, but they also ruin local vegetation and can harm small species in the area.

There are some things to know before setting out on a wild boar hunt; primarily that the worst time to hunt these animals is in Decemeber when litters are born. The sow becomes fiercely protective over her young, so not only can a hunter’s dogs get harmed, but even the hunter himself. The sow makes a small depression in the earth where she lines it with grass and branches and has her offspring. When being hunted, the boar takes cover in dense thickets.

The cur is one dog with a great wild boar hunting reputation. They are versatile and loyal, and have the ability to run long distances for a great amount of time. Many hunters also use the American bulldog for the wild boar hunt, though there are different variations of this breed. Many hunters do not use the Johnson line, which was bred with an English bulldog and a mastiff. However, the Scott lines are used as they were bred to be used for big game such as the boar.

It’s important to know local laws and regulations before heading out on your wild boar hunting trip. Only fifteen states offer wild boar hunting; Alabama, Arkansas, California, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Kentucky, Mississippi, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, and South Carolina. The laws vary in each of these areas, so doing your research will pay off, allowing the hunter a safe and lawful wild boar hunt. Some hunters prefer to hire a guide, in which case they can suggest the proper equipment necessary for the hunt.

If you have ever wondered what an animal feels and just how happy they really are, look no further than a 2010 study on pigs conducted by experts from Newcastle University. The School of Agriculture, Food and Rural Development have successfully shown that depending on how content a pig is, it will mirror what its mood is like. All that to say, pigs are indeed capable of complex emotions and they are directly influenced how they feel by the conditions they are living in.

 

In the study, conducted by Dr. Catherine Douglas, researchers set out to determine if pigs were feeling optimistic or pessimistic about life in general based on the way they were living.

The pigs were taught to show how they were feeling with the use of a an apple attached to a note on a percussion instrument and a kind of dog training ‘clicker’ that had something attached to it which was not as pleasant [as the apple] – a rustling paper bag. Half the pigs were put into an environment in which they were given more space to roam and the freedom to both walk and play with ‘pig’ toys in fresh straw. The other half of the pigs were placed in a smaller area that contained no straw and just one interactive toy. A squeaky noise was then played to see how the pigs would respond.

 

The pigs living in the better environment took an optimistic approach to the sound they had never heard before and went on to approach it with the expectation they would get the treat (the apple).

The other pigs, living in the area which was not as pleasant, took the opposite approach and were wary of the noise thus did not attempt to come forward for the treat. The reactions of the pigs is similar to the way humans feel and will react when approached with something ambiguous. For example, if your boss calls you into your office on a day when you are feeling particularly stressed and out of sorts, you will likely conclude that you have done something wrong. On the other hand, if your day has been a positive one and you are called into the boss’ office, you might think you will be greeted with praise and, even a raise.

 

The study done on the pigs is part of an ongoing project to understand quality of life for animals on a farm with the intent of improving animal welfare and animal lives in general. One of the United Kingdom’s leading experts in pig welfare says the results of this latest study need to be further “refined and validated so it could be used to help scientists determine what is really important to the pig for its well-being.”

 

It goes without saying that any pig stuffed animal you might have in your possession should only ever be treated with the utmost love and care. After all, that pig stuffed animal is likely your most treasured companion and confidante and as is the case, is regarded as no less than a member of the family.
